Walnut Shed

Started 2018

A multi-purpose farm utility building.

Located in Tasmania on a small hobby farm, this shed is required to accomodate a variety of functions to support farm operations including storage and the building of components for an online business.

A pre-fabricated CLT building was appealing to a client who sought inspiration from the German-Austrian farm buildings and, suited the remote location and long wait time for builders.

Starting with a given functional layout, a number of design iterations were investigated to proportion the large form, provide daylight and external undercover areas. Ultimately a very simple interpretation with large overhanging eaves was preferred and protected the cladding.

Mass timber panels were utilised for the building shell, and mezzanine floor including the stair. Engineered timber glu-lam was utilised for the structural and roof framing. External timber cladding and window frames in Silver Top Ash could be sourced from local mills and met the low 12.5 BAL rating.
